The annual meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons was held from March 11 to 15 in New Orleans. The conference highlighted recent advances in the diagnosis and management of musculoskeletal conditions.

Ran Schwarzkopf, M.D., of the University of California Irvine Medical Center, and colleagues evaluated the effects of metabolic syndrome (MetS) on patients undergoing total joint replacement surgery. The investigators found that MetS produced an increased rate of short-term complications, found likely to have longer term implications because the impact of MetS on all surgical complication rates (in hospital and/or within one year post surgery) was significant.

For the second time in three years, the Orthopaedic Research & Education Foundation (OREF) has chosen one of UC Irvine Orthopaedic residents to receive their prestigious OREF Resident Clinician Scientist Training Grant. The 2014 recipient of this award is Dr. Minal Tapadia. Research grant and award recipients are selected through OREF's independent, peer-review process, supporting musculoskeletal research and education-seeking clinically relevant advancements which orthopaedic surgeons can apply in daily practice to improve their patient’s lives. The OREF grant will afford Dr. Tapadia, also a lawyer by trade, to pursue her interest as an academic orthopaedic surgeon, teaching and conducting clinical research and potentially developing new therapeutic and diagnostic techniques, which may lead to the discovery of new therapeutic agents. Dr. Tapadia defended her proposal against rigorous competition and met strict peer review standards, earning her a grant for research and innovation in orthopaedic surgery. Congratulations, Dr. Minal Tapadia, on a job well done!"
